What is Pterygium?

- a pterygium is a non-cancerous growth on the conjunctiva (thin membrane covering the white part of the eye)
- it's also known as "surfer's eye" due to its prevalence in people who spend time outdoors

*causes:*

- prolonged exposure to uv radiation from the sun or tanning beds
- wind, dust, and dry environments
- genetics and certain medical conditions

*symptoms:*

- redness and inflammation
- blurred vision
- discomfort or itchiness
- visible growth on the eye

*prevention tips:*

1. *wear sunglasses*: choose sunglasses with uv protection (uv 400) and wraparound frames to protect your eyes from the sides.
2. *wear a hat*: a wide-brimmed hat can help block uv rays from reaching your eyes.
3. *stay hydrated*: drink plenty of water to keep your eyes moist and comfortable.
4. *avoid rubbing*: try to avoid rubbing your eyes, as this can irritate the conjunctiva and increase the risk of pterygium growth.
5. *get regular eye exams*: catching pterygium early can make treatment easier and more effective.
